[ Sea areas do not affect the practical and the
symbolic
value of inland waterways as common European heritage ] |
|
| Waterways provide valuable links for sea-going pleasure boats. Many waterways in Europe are navigable by yachts and other craft that can cross the sea, without having to step their masts. Even for craft suitable only for inland navigation, short-sea crossings are not incompatible with cruising from the British Isles to continent and vice versa. This raises the issue of providing ferry or equivalent service for moving inland craft across the sea (in this example, Dublin to Liverpool). Provision of such services could prove invaluable for the organisation of international boat rallies, as well as for developing use of the isolated peripheral waterways of Europe : Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Norway, Portugal... |
