The Danube flows for a short distance through Slovakia, from km 1880.26 to km 1708.20, the first 8km being shared with Austria on the right bank, and the last 150km with Hungary. Thus only a short stretch around the capital Bratislava (km 1865) is entirely within Slovakian territory. However, the country also holds significant potential for both commercial and recreational navigation on the canalised river Výh, which enters the Danube at the port of Komàrno (km 1767). The is being developed as a multi-purpose project upstream as far as Zilina, a distance of 250km. Several large hydropower schemes have been completed in the middle course, with locks 110m by 24m, but the lowest lock at Selice and the 11 locks in the upstream length from Hlohovec to Zilina are limited to barges of Class III dimensions (70 by 9m)…
