For nearly 40 years the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg has enjoyed the benefits of high-capacity inland shipping, after contributing approximately 1% to the cost of canalising the Moselle in 1954-1964. The Moselle flows along the south-east of Luxemburg between Schengen et Wasserbillig, over a distance of 37.42km (1.08km of border common to France, the rest shared with Germany). Within this length are the locks at Apach (on the right bank, in France), Stadtbredimus and Grevenmacher (on the left bank, under the jurisdiction of Luxemburg). Mertert is the main port, handling approx. 2Mt (mainly steel products, clinker and petroleum products). Boating is important, as testified by the traffic through the boat locks (18 x 3,4m) maintained beside the two high-capacity locks within Luxemburg's jurisdiction. The year 2000 saw completion of deepening of the Moselle through to Luxemburg and Metz, so that barges now load to a draught of 3.00m
